I feel bad that I'm not going to have this in any shape to post by tonight. I also feel bad that I've just been posting and haven't had any sort of preview. Here's the shitty, unedited first little part in some sort of compensation:
The witch's barrier vanished in a bright flash of light, leaving the street empty except for two young girls.
Mami sighed. Her Puella Magi outfit disappeared and was replaced by school clothes. “I think that's it for tonight, we've cleared out the area.” She looked over at her companion, who was breathing heavily from exertion.
“I—I see.” Tomiko coughed, not yet used to the heavy burden of using magic. She struggled to straighten her own uniform, smoothing over the wrinkles with her hands, but gave up when she realized the wrinkles had been there for a while and probably weren't coming out any time soon.
Mami's expression turned to sympathy. She had only met Tomiko a few weeks ago, and Kyubey just contracted her a couple days before. Though Tomiko looked exhausted after the day's fighting, sweat dripping down her chin and onto the pavement, Mami had to admit that she was doing well for someone so inexperienced.
“Nanashi-san,” Mami said, lifting up her hand to rest it on the other girl's shoulder, “My apartment is pretty close by. Why don't you stay for the night?”
Her heart skipped a beat as Tomiko looked up at her with watery eyes. For a second she thought that she had somehow offended the girl—she meant the invitation as a gesture of kindness, but she could think of how it could be skewed. Mami didn't dwell on the fact that she overheard classmates calling Tomiko insulting nicknames regarding her situation, but she didn't ignore it, either.
“Thank you, Tomoe-san. I would appreciate it.” Tomiko said, blinking to clear her eyes. Mami's heart leap again, but this time she had no idea why.
“Well then, shall we go?” Mami smiled at Tomiko, who returned the expression wholeheartedly.
